Boliden acquires Kemira's sulphuric acid plant in Kokkola

Boliden has acquired Kemira's sulphuric acid plant and business in Kokkola, Finland, effective as of 1st May 2010. The acquisition will enable Boliden to conduct its sulphuric acid manufacturing operations at Kokkola in-house, and thereby gain control over the entire process flow.

Sulphur dioxide is a by-product of both zinc and copper production. The sulphur dioxide can be refined to produce sulphuric acid, a chemical with a wide range of uses in numerous sectors, including the artificial fertiliser, pulp and mining industries. Boliden's Kokkola zinc smelter in Finland has previously sold its sulphur dioxide to Kemira Oy, which has, in turn, refined the gas to produce sulphuric acid.

The sulphuric acid plant has an annual production capacity of approximately 300,000 tonnes and the majority of its production is sold to local companies, as well as to other industrial facilities in Finland. The existing contracts will be taken over in conjunction with the acquisition, which also includes installations, land and around 20 employees. The transaction will not have a significant effect on Boliden's results. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

The Boliden Group is a significant producer of sulphuric acid and has sulphuric acid plants at the Odda zinc smelter and the Harjavalta and Rönnskär copper smelters, producing a total of 1.1 million tonnes of sulphuric acid in 2009.

Boliden is a leading European metals company whose core competence is in the fields of exploration, mining, smelting and recycling. Boliden's main metals are zinc and copper. Other important metals extracted and refined include lead, gold and silver. The operations are conducted in two Business Areas: Mines and Smelters. The number of employees is approximately 4 400 and the turnover amounts to approximately SEK 28 billion annually. Its shares are listed on NASDAQ OMX Stockholm, segment Large Cap and on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canada.

The abnormally high seismic activity in Garpenberg has decreased and mining production at low levels will commence in the second quarter. The first quarter throughput was just under 0.8 Mton instead of the expected slightly over 0.9 Mton at already communicated grades. All inspections are not yet complete but production in the most affected part of the mine is not expected to resume in 2026. Until further notice, Garpenberg's production is therefore estimated to be around 30 percent of the guided capacity of 3.7 Mton per year. For the first quarter of 2026, EBITDA will be negatively affected by approximately SEK -400 million at today's prices and terms.

Boliden has decided to invest in a new hoist system at Garpenberg and an industrial demonstration plant for the production of supplementary cementitious material at Rönnskär. The investments, which amount to SEK 4 billion and SEK 1.5 billion respectively, will strengthen the earnings capacity of both units and lay the foundation for exploiting further future opportunities.
